16 October 2011 Boat Repairs. From 1030 on Sunday 23 October, Rob and Nathan will be checking out and making minor repairs to club boats. If anyone can spare a couple of hours to help them get through as many boats as possible they would be very grateful.

2 September 2011 Update on the Test Event results to date: Paul (K1 1000) was 4th in the "B" Final, Rachel (K1 500) has made the "A" final and Lani and Hayleigh (K2 500) also made the "A" final. The womens finals are tomorrow (Saturday) morning. Results are on the ICF website here.

30 August 2011 Results from National Marathon Champs are up on Worcester’s website   Highlights of the weekend were brilliant performances of Vicki & Alice in girls under 18 and Jack & Ed in boys under 16 who not only won top gold in K2 but also gold and silver positions in K1.
Vicki, Alice, Fay, Jon and Mark were selected to races for GBR at the World Marathon Championships in Singapore in October - that’s five Wey paddlers in a GBR squad of nine!

22 August 2011 Following a successful World Championships GB qualified 7 athlete quota slots for the Olympics - three of these due to Wey paddlers (Silver Medal from Liam in the MK2 and 4th place from Abi and Rachel in the WK4)! NOTE that these are athlete quota slots and the actual individuals who will take those slots will not be decided until next year.
16 August 2011 The Sprint World Championships, which are also Olympic qualifiers, start this Thursday. We wish the best of luck to all the GB competitors - especially Wey paddlers Abi Edmonds (K4 500m), Rachel Cawthorn (K1 500m and K4 500m), Liam Heath (K2 200m), Paul Wycherley (K1 1000m) and Ed Cox (K1 200m relay). There is coverage on Eurosport for the 4 days of the competition and a round up included during the Olympic Countdown programme on BBC2 on Sunday at 15:00. 22 July 2011 Some good results from the first day of the Marathon Europeans Championship: Alice took Silver in the JWK1 and Mark Bronze in the U23MK1. Sadly Vicki swam off the start, however her Dad picked up a Gold in the Masters (well done Adi!). Full results here.
21 July 2011 Over the past two days Tim Brabants and our own Paul Wycherley have been racing head to head to decide who will represent GB in the K1 1000 race at the World Championships next month. Tim won the first race, but Paul won the next two securing his place at the Championships. See report on the BBC website here.

5 July 2011 Results from the July Nottingham Regatta are here. We were pipped into second place in the Macgregor Paddle by Reading, but a really good result considering our top seniors are hard in training for the World Championships and some of our U23's were competing in Croatia! It's a real shame that Lightning points are not included in the competition. Well done to Miki on promotion to Lightning A! A good team effort all round.

25 June 2011 At the Marathon World Cup in Rome Vicki won Gold and Alice Silver in the JWK1 event and together they won Gold on the K2 event! Fay with Lizzie Broughton won Gold in the Senior WK2 event and Mark and Jon won Bronze in the SMK2. Claire was 5th in the SWK1. Full results here.

18 June 2011 On Thursday 9th June 2011 nine top Wey kayakers received sports grants from Guildford Borough Council presented by Cllr. Terence Patrick, Mayor of Guildford. Jim was also presented with a grant for the club which will go towards much needed equipment. Photos from the event are here.

"I know a lot of you have wondered what we're up to (to be honest we've done the same on many occasions over the past year and can only hope we've provided you all with some amusement along the way) but the time for DW is finally fast approaching. During the late morning of Easter Saturday we will depart Devizes Wharf heading for Westminster. If we go in the right direction. We're doing the race to raise money for a very worthy charity, Ovacome. Ovacome is the only UK wide charity that provides support for Ovarian Cancer sufferers and their families. Ovarian Cancer is something that has affected the lives of both our families and I'm sure you'll agree it's a good cause. As is traditional, we've set up a charity donation page to make the process of donating as easy as possible. If you could spare a few quid to donate to the cause, we'd be eternally grateful. We suspect it's going to be a long night, and the more we can raise, the easier it's going to be."

27 March 2011 A nice round 100 paddlers competed in the Wey Sprints. The weather was kind and an enjoyable day was had by all. Results posted here. You can watch some video of the exciting relay racing here and photos from the day here.
Meanwhile Jack, Ed, Rebecca and Vicki took part in the Gent Marathon.  Jack won the under 16 boys event beating Ed into second place by 1 second. Vicki was 2nd in the Junior Women event - website here.

26 February 2011 Message from Kathryn de Ferrer:
Like many, I was horrified by the images coming out of NZ this week and as a New Zealander, have decided to try and raise money for the NZ Earthquake Appeal. I'm planning to commute to work this Friday ... by kayak. I can go from my home in Godalming all the way along the canal system, to my school in Addlestone, a distance of about 30km. To reach school in time, it will mean a 4.30am, start. Fortunately my family and friends are all safe, although some have severe damage to their homes, but my niece's husband has just been called to Christchurch to take part in the Search and Rescue operation. Please sponsor me, either by signing up at the club, or through my just giving page. Thank you. Kathryn.

25 October 2010 Remember the Triathlon is this Sunday! PLEASE make sure all entries are emailed to triathlon@weykayak.co.uk before Saturday. We still need some more marshalls, so please ask all friends and family if they'd be prepared to help. The event can only run smoothly with support from everyone. Also - don't forget to try and raise some sponsorship money to help support the Samson Centre. There is a justgiving page set up - if everyone could raise £20 to £50, we could really help support this fantastic facility.

New this year - to run alongside the club Triathlon, we are running a Junior Biathlon for U14s. There will be a 2k paddle (to Seven Arches and back) and a run on pavements outside the club - fully marshalled. Entry on the day for this event - although you can also email in advance if preferred.

Ed McKeever is World Champion at K1 200m, Tim Brabants back in form with silver at the K1 1000m and Wey paddlers involved in the rest of the medals: Liam Heath and Ed Cox (with Jonny Schofield and Ed McKeever) won Silver in the 200m relay, Liam and Jonny won Bronze in the K1 200m and Rachel Cawthorn won Bronze in the K1 500m. 5 July 2010 Following the very successfully European Sprint Championships is Trasona, Spain this weekend Wey now has TWO Europeans Champions - Liam (with Jonnie Schofield) in K2 200m and Rachel in K1 1000m. Some amazing results from World Cup 3 in Germany: Rachel won GOLD in both the 1000m and 500m and BRONZE in the 200m race. Liam (with Jonnie Schofield) won GOLD in the K2 200m (just like in Hungary) and both teamed up with Ed Cox and Ed McKeever to win SILVER in the K1 200m relay race. 3 June 2010 In addition to the National Sprint Regatta at Nottingham, this weekend also sees World Cup 3 in Duisburg, where the 200m men, fresh from success in Szeged, will be joined by the 1000m men and the GB Women's squad. For Wey this means that Paul Wycherley, Rachel Cawthorn and Abi Edmonds will be joining Liam Heath and Ed Cox - good luck to all!

Adrian Croucher is doing the work which is due to begin on 15 February and will take about 3 weeks (depending on the weather). 6 November 2009 The GWC 400 Club draw for November was made by Howard Smith from the Basingstoke Canoe Club. The winning ticket for £50 was No.32. Wey won with 492 points with Worcester 2nd on 477 and Richmond 3rd with 468 points. This is the second consecutive year that the club has won the double of the Marathon and Sprint Championships. 5 August 2009 The Junior World Championships proved to be very successful for Dean, Matt and Tom (BCU write up here). Next up is the final international sprint event of the year - the Senior World Championships, which this year take place in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada between 13 - 16 August. We wish the GB team every success, especially Wey Paddlers Rachel (K1 & K4), Paul (K4) and Ed (K2). The event website is here.

K1 500 BronzeK4 200 Bronze
The GB Team had a great Regatta at the European Sprint Championships, with Rachel picking up Bronze in both the K4 200m and, more significantly, in the K1 500m - the first ever medal by a British Woman at the Olympic distance! Another impressive result came from the Men's K4, including our own Paul Wycherley, which qualified directly for the "A" final where they finished in 7th. Read the BCU report here.

24 June 2009 Busy weekend coming up. The main event, of course, being the Wey Marathon this Sunday where all the signs are that it will be as hugely successful as last year. Everyone always complains of terrible head winds at Nottingham Regattas. For a change, last weekend saw a really good tail wind - yet still everyone complains - just no pleasing some people! The full results are here and some photos from Antony here.
3 June 2009 As well as the Sprint Regatta in Nottingham this weekend, there's also World Cup 3 taking place in Szeged, Hungary. GB is sending reduced numbers compared to World Cup 2, however Rachel is still going. Follow the action here.
2 June 2009 The GWC 400 Club draws for May and June were drawn on 1 June by John Hambly, the MSTG Chairman. The winning tickets were No 53 for May and No. 82 for June. "This weekend can I encourage you all to get down to Tonbridge for the 1066 Marathon.  This is the Hasler Marathon for our region.  Details are here.  Unfortunately the 1066 clashes with the Basingstoke marathon.  Basingstoke CC is NOT in our region, so anyone going there will not contribute Hasler points for the club.  The way the Hasler points are calculated means that if we do not score well at the 1066 Marathon we might not qualify for the Hasler Final."

Paddlers at Nottingham had to battle against a strong head wind on Saturday, however on Sunday the conditions were much improved with a light tail wind. Once again Wey produced some outstanding results with the fastest Man (Paul - K1 500m and K1 1000m), fastest Woman (Rachel - K1 500m and K1 1000m), fastest Boy (Dean - K1 500m and K1 1000m) and fastest Boy's K2 (Dean and Matt - K2 1000m) with many others putting in good performances at this important selection regatta. The icing on the cake was that both Rachel (K1 1000m) and Paul (K4 1000m) set new Holme Pierrepont course records! Well done to all Wey paddlers, particularly Oscar, Ed and Simon on their promotion to Boys C.

13 April 2009 George and Calum have won the DW Endeavour class in a time of 20:06:33 (read the blog). This means that Wey paddlers have won this category two year's running! They were closely followed by James and Lucy who came in 3rd in a time of 20:46:25. Richard was 13th in the Senior K1 race in a time of 18:59:43 - this is an impressive result as Richard only switched from K2 to K1 at the last minute and is still a Junior. Well done to all (and their supporters!) - full results here.

A strong headwind on Saturday and a less strong headwind on Sunday at Nottingham gave some slow times in the first National Regatta of the season. We saw, however, some excellent results for Wey - fastest Men (200m, 500m, 1000m), fastest Woman (200m, 500m, 1000m), fastest Boy (500m, 1000m) and if Maria would wear the right colour vest, fastest Girl (500m)! 31 March 2009 In the Gent Marathon at the weekend Alice was second in the Junior Women’s K1 and Charlie was also second in Junior Men’s K1 (despite what the results says). The results quote Jack as third (but waiting for confirmation of this!).

16 January 2009 The final day of flatwater paddling at the AYOF saw Ed Rutherford (ELM) win gold in the MK1 500, Jess Walker (ROY) win Bronze in the WK1 500 and Jess with Abi win silver WK2 500. A good day!
15 January 2009 At the Australian Youth Olympic Festival Abi Edmonds finished a creditable 5th in the K1 1000m. Sadly Jess Walker (ROY) was taken ill with the heat (44 degrees!) and could not compete in her K1 final and the K2 final with Abi. Ed Rutherford (ELM) took bronze in the K1 1000m. The 500m races take place tomorrow.

I checked out the river today following yesterday's rain and the normally placid river Wey had been transformed into a raging torrent! If the Hare and Hounds had been held today paddlers may have had a small problem negotiating some of the bridges in Guildford:

13 December 2008 The Bumper Christmas Draw for the GWC 400 club took place at the Christmas Dinner on 6 December. The £200 prize was won by Ticket No. 32, and the £50 prize by No. 46. The draw was made by Councilor Mike Clark (Chairman of the Guildford Sports Council) who was our guest at the dinner.

23 November 2008 The results of today's Hare and Hounds have been posted here. Jack (U12B) with 47.56 and Vikki (U16L) with 46.42 both set new course records - both beating their records from the last race. Also Mark set a new U16 course record of 42.54 - well done to all!

9 November 2008 The November draw for the GWC 400 Club, took place on 3rd November and the winning ticket was No. 5. The bumper draw for December will take place at the Wey Kayak Club Xmas Dinner on 6th December. There will be a £200 prize, as well as the monthly £50. Make sure you are in the draw Christmas Draw, by joining the GWC 400 by the end of November - details here.
4 November 2008 Results for the Hare and Hounds have been updated to show Time Order (as well as Position Order). Given that there was a strong flow on the river generating waves that caused a number of capsizes (speaking from experience!), it is really impressive that we have two new course records: Jack (U12B) with 48.13 and Vikki (U16L) with 47.05 - beating her own Ladies Course Record - well done to both!. The October draw for the GWC 400 Club was held on Sunday 19 October. It took place at the Waterside Centre after the Wey Triathlon and the draw was made by Tim Brabants. The winning ticket was No.6.

Sunday's Wey Triathlon was a great success, with nearly 4 times as many entering than last year! There were some impressive individual performances and a good time was had by all. The full results from the event are here with some photos here. We were honoured to have two very special guests. A big thank you to Tim Brabants, Olympic Champion, who had been hoping to compete but was unwell, however he managed to stay all day and presented prizes to the winners. Paul Hobrough of Physical Fix generously donated prizes for first place in each category and photos of the prize giving are also in the gallery. The second honoured guest was John Hambly the founder of the MSTG who stayed and watched with interest all the competitors of different abilities.

The event is attracting a lot of interest (see local newspaper article here) and there's quite a few GB kayakers taking part including, of course, Tim Brabants, who will also be presenting the prizes. Mike Walsh has been appointed by the Waterside Centre Trustees as Gym Manager. He will be at the Centre at various times on most day, and any comments and suggestions regarding the Gym should now be addressed to him, in the first instance.  Mike is also an appointed Inductor for the Gym. We thank Mike for taking on this important role.

A busy time ahead for our International paddlers: this weekend, as well as the Marathon World Cup 1 in Brandenburg (team below and website here), there is also the Sprint World Cup 2 in Duisburg where Wey paddles Rachel Cawthorn, Ed Cox and Paul Wycherley will be competing (website here).
Then the following weekend Wey Juniors Phoebe Ayres, Mark Childerstone, Abi Edmonds, Charlotte Thomas, Dean Terry and Matt Welch will be competing at Bochum, Germany (website here).
